Throughout the 19th century, there were a number of maritime accidents nearby: On 24 November 1841, a schooner, the James Cook, struck some rocks near Glashedy Island and broke up. The master and nine crew drowned. [9] On the morning of 22 April 1847, seven fishermen from the Isle of Doagh were drowned. In relatively calm weather, their boat capsized while crossing the Bay of Strabega after it was hit by a sudden swell. The dead were Donald Doherty, owner of the boat, who left a wife and six children; Patrick Doherty, who left a wife and three children; James McLoughlin (or McLaughlin), a wife and four children; Patrick (Roe) Doherty, a wife and one child; William Doherty, a young unmarried man; Hugh McCool, who was unmarried; and John McLoughlin (or McLaughlin), a widow's son, and her only support.

Be very careful as no footpaths just rough ground and you go at your own risk but well worth it especially the very low door, the gushing spring and the spitting rock at high tide. There are numerous references to the inhabitants of the Isle of Doagh, in particular Carrickabraghy, in the Annals of the Four Masters. The earliest historical reference to Carrickabraghy is in 834, when Niall Caille led an army into Leinster. The Annals refer to one of his officers, Fearghas, son of Badhbhchadh, who was Lord of Carraig Bhrachai. According to the Annals, Fearghas was killed by Munster men during the campaign. 17th and 18th centuries [ edit] Several townlands within the Isle of Doagh are mentioned in the 1665 Hearth money rolls: a tax levied on chimneys whose revenues were used to support the Royal Household. A total of 18 households paid the tax from "Lagacurry, Fegurt, Carickbracky, Carowreagh, and Ballym'Murty", of which 11 households carried the name of "O'Dougherty". [7] In the 1654 Civil Survey, these townlands are also referred to as the property of The 1st Earl of Donegall (who also held the subsidiary title Viscount Chichester). [8] The survey provided some limited information about economic activities in the area, which were the cultivation of oats, barley, wheat and rye.
The Isle of Doagh hasn't been an entire island since the end of the last Ice Age. It is now a smaller peninsula within the Inishowen peninsula, bounded in the west by Pollan Bay on the Atlantic Ocean and Trawbrega Bay in the west. There is an extensive dune system on the Isle of Doagh, which is renowned for its flora and fauna. On a large rock, named Friars Rock to the northern end of Pollan Bay, stands the ruins of Carraickabraghy Castle. It is commonly accepted that the castle was erected before 1600 by Phelemy Brasleigh O'Doherty. At that time Carrickabraghy would have been almost an island, with little ground separating it from the mainland. The Doagh Famine Village is located here. This open-air museum contains examples of thatched buildings and traditional lifestyles. Attractions include recreations of an Irish wake, Orange Hall, Presbyterian Meeting House, mass rock, hedge school, eviction scene and Republican Safe House. Map

These sand dunes are some of the highest in Europe. Formed around 5000 years ago, they now have their own protected & unique ecosystem. As seen here, rising sea levels & stormy weather are eroding them faster than ever into the sea. I hope nature manages to stabilise them again very soon, as they are so delicate & irreplaceable. Each year many folk travel abroad to highly congested tourist traps in search of tropical waters & white sandy beaches. If we only realised what is already here in Ireland along our shores, then we may think twice before spending small fortunes to jet away, when we can easily visit beaches like this right on our own doorsteps ⛱ Hope you enjoy!

The site is locked and under repair but it is still accessible and worth a visit. It is required to walk a short distance over some uneven rocky land so care is required. We all enjoyed the site. Very wild and untouched. No amenities or facilities on this deserted castle just a sign with some details of the history of the site. Apr 2018 • Friends My father and I drove out here as part of our tour around Inishowen to visit castles and ruins associated with the Doherty/O'Dochartaigh family.
