Skiing in Fernie BC and Staying at The Timbers Lodge RIDE THE GEM OF BC'S POWDER HIGHWAY. Powder skiers have played in Fernie for decades with best odds for powder over other Canadian ski resorts. Yet for years Fernie Alpine Resort was known only to a smaller circle of keen powder skiers. It had a handful of fixed chair lifts, and access to the upper reaches of the resort required a steep T Bar ride and a surface cable tow. It was a weekend hill in the 60's. In the 70's Fernie saw further development by Heiko, its European owner. He was hands on in its development, plodding it along every year. I first skied there in the 90's. Even then, it was still folksy, you got to know the lifties by name. Only two of its bowls had lift accessed terrain with the other used for slackcountry. Hay prices are going way up, as it livestock feed, thanks to all of the flooding in a multitude of regions around the nation. Look for food prices to begin soaring by the beginning of September, if they have not in your area already. Berry picking season appears to be almost over. Some black raspberries are still coming on, but the bushes are nearly played out. The youngest grandkiddos and I spent a good bit of time harvesting chicory this week, then roasting it to preserve it. Forest school these past days included more in the woods orienteering, foraging and wildcrafting chicory, ironweed, goldenrod, more jewelweed, and yarrow. We finally got rid of all the poison hemlock. I have the stalks that were cut with a machete soaking in a bleach bath in the sun. The clothes, plastic safety glasses, thick medical gloves, and face masks are bagged up and will be soaked in bleach as well.

In the communities in which we work, people rely on the environment every day to sustain their way of life; to farm, to eat, and to build their homes. As a result, it is vital that we care for the environment in every community we work in, as well as empowering young people to find new opportunities for income, beyond subsistence farming. The majority of communities we work with rely on subsistence farming, making them particularly vulnerable to climate change and environmental degradation. Education gives young people in these communities the chance for more employment opportunities, and better resilience to climate change.
